Feldon Rigs Vol.3 - Land Rover Discovery 1

Vol.3 of Feldon Rigs is a really special vehicle; the legendary 4x4 that participated in the Camel Trophy events, combined Land Rover's ruggedness with Range Rover's comfort and of course it's no other than the Land Rover Discovery 1 (also the first 4x4 we've ever owned so yes, we get a bit emotional here). 

This particular one belongs to Fraser Boyd from our NZ Feldon Family and it is a 1999 300tdi Disco, one of the last ones that rolled out of production before being replaced by the Disco 2. 

The engine, as already mentioned is the 300tdi, one of Land Rovers "golden engines" and as described by Boyd himself, "slow and rattley but hasn’t let me down yet".

The whole setup and mods done to this car are minimal, apart from the typical 2" lift and a few aftermarket recovery points, front & rear. It is equipped with Feldon Shelter's Hawks Nest V2 Wide model roof top tent in Green colour (which works in an epic colour combo with green Disco), mounted on Front Runner Load Bars. 

The vehicle rides on factory Disco white steelies, wrapped around some good ol' 235/85r16s Maxxis RAZR Muddies; which in around experience is an IDEAL tyre size for a D1. 

The camping setup is again simple, everything you need - nothing you don't, Boyd had both Feldon Shelter's Crows Nest & Hawks Nest up there, which is the main camping mod of the vehicle, the rear set up is described by Boyd as "We normally just stack the boot like a game of Tetris and hit the road".

Now, finally, our question to the owner: Why You Overland? 

Fraser Boyd: I’ve always had a passion for silly old trucks and in NZ old trucks and camping/overlanding kind of go hand in hand. Always loved the outdoors and exploring new places and have always felt that there is so much I have yet to see and do in this country. What better way to do that than behind the wheel of a crusty old Landy!
